Since I started the fly fishing business and on my travels abroad to promote it I have often been asked the question, “What makes fly fishing in Iceland so unique?”

My answer is always a bit complicated and to fully understand everything let’s look at a few facts about the island and the fly fishing options.

Iceland is one of the youngest land masses on earth and is still growing about 5cm every year. Iceland is the second largest island in Europe after Great Britain and it is the least populated country in Europe with about 80% of the island uninhabited. Iceland only has about 300.000 inhabitants and most of them live in the greater Reykjavík area. The island has the biggest glacier in Europe and an abundance of running water, some spring fed rivers, while other rely more on snowmelt and rainwater many of whom are crystal clear. Due to Iceland’s position it has extreme differentiate between seasons creating a great environment to protect its species of fish.

It is well known that the exclusivity of the Icelandic rivers have played a big part in protecting the rivers with limiting how many person can fish per day.

Long days in the summertime create the perfect conditions for hardcore anglers that like to fish all night.

There are not many places on earth where your group of friend can have a whole river to your selves for fly fishing for an entire week but Iceland is one of them.

The fact is that Iceland has so much quantity of fish and so many great rivers and lakes that you are almost certain to catch a fish if you know what you are doing.

Many of our rivers have become catch and release ensuring healthy stocks of fish that is allowed to spend the years needed to grow it’s size to the trophy size most anglers are after.
