Reykjadalsa is a relatively small river that holds a great stock of brown trout along with getting good runs of salmon throughout the summer. The river runs through plains for the first 15km making it perfect for dry fly fishing, after that the river falls a faster all the way up to the canyon at the top. Reykjadalsa is one of the tributaries of the Laxa in Adaldal as the it runs through the lake Vestmannsvatn and changes its name as it runs from the lake to the Laxá the river is called Eyvindalækur.
The river has an amazing character with such diversity that there should always be something for every angler weather it is fishing the plains with dry flies, hitch or sight fishing for salmon and brown trout in the upper canyon pools.
The fishing season starts on April 1st with brown trout fishing and at that time it is not unusual for angler to be catching 15-20 browns a day with a fairly good average size. Later in June the salmon start making their way up river in small numbers as the dry fly season starts. The focus is mostly on brown trout so there are not many salmon caught in June every year.
In early July the salmon run picks up and around the middle of July the salmon fishing really gets interesting as the numbers increase dramatically which gives a nice bonus with the dry fly fishing for trout.
The prime time period of fishing for brown trout in Reykjadalsa is from June 1st and throughout the season. The best way to catch them is by targeting them with what they are feeding on and this is the time dry flies are most effective.
Vestmannsvatn
Along with the fishing in Reykjadalsa a license for the Lake Vestmannsvatn is included in the permits. The lake holds a great big stock of good size arctic char along with small size brown trout making it a great option for families. Rules: Fly, spin or bait.
