The salmon season in Mýrarkvísl 2015!

The salmon season in Mýrarkvísl 2015 started slow due to cold temperatures and those anglers that bet on fishing for the early season bigger salmon were rather unlucky as few salmon arrived making it tough fishing throughout most of July. In a normal year we have started catching a few salmon in June and then July should be producing about 30. to 60. salmon while this year there were only 7. salmon landed in July. Fortunately we had very good dry fly fishing for brown trout to fall back on, saving our salmon trips from catching nothing. According to one of the guides on the big Laxá in Aðaldal the grills arriving from the ocean where piled up below the waterfall in Bjarg Strengur due to high water making the waterfall impassable. Although July was very tough fishing, that soon changed as we could see big runs come into the river in the end of July as soon as temperatures rose slightly, it stopped raining and the water level from the Laxá dropped.

As it turned out the grills arrived in such quantity at a time that we have never seen anything like it. We could see the runs come in from the bridge in the bottom part of Mýrarkvísl jumping every so often on there way up river piling up in the bridge pool and disappearing up stream making room for new salmon arriving.  In fact the total catch in August turned out to be 97. salmon on the 3 rods which is great with the best day producing 10 salmon.

September turned out to be the month that summer arrived with great weather. All conditions were perfect for fishing with small surface flies and riffle hitch with amazing catches on all the beats in the river. We were extremely happy with how well beat 1. fished throughout September and in fact how many spawning couples we could see throughout the river in the end of the season giving great hope for years to come. The total catch for the 22 days fished in September was 67. salmon on 3 rods.

This season ended up being the best salmon season in years in Mýrarkvísl and we are hopeful for a steady increase in catches in the coming years and here’s why…

Since 2013 every salmon that has run into the Mýrarkvísl has been released again and in fact every salmon that is part of the river system of the big Laxá in Aðladal including Reykjadalsá so seeing the number rise is only natural. Experience has also shown us that with all these salmon in the river in 2013 to 2015 a fairly good percentage of those fish will go back to the ocean to feed and return as very large salmon 20lbs and over.
